The City of Ames utilizes a Resource Recovery facility which produces refuse-derived fuel which is co-combusted in the city's coal-fired power station. RDF provides about 10% of the thermal input to the plant.

The Ames plant was one of the first successful waste-to-energy schemes in the U.S.
